Water is the essence of life and is needed by every cell in our bodies.  Most people just don't realize the benefits for the human body of drinking water daily.

With two thirds of the earth's surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75 percent of it, it is evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth.  Water circulates through the land just as it does through the human body, transporting, dissolving, replenishing nutrients and organic matter, while carrying away waste material.  Further in the body, it regulates the activities of fluids, tissues, cells, lymph, blood and glandular secretions.

It sounds so simple. H20.  Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. But this substance better known as water is the most essential element, next to air, to our survival. Water truly is everywhere; still most of us take it for granted.

An average adult body contains 42 litres of water and with just a small loss of 2.7 litres he or she can suffer from dehydration, displaying symptoms of irritability, fatigue, nervousness, dizziness, weakness, headaches and consequently reach a state of pathology.  Dr F. Batmanghelidj, in his book 'Your body's many cries for water', gives a wonderful essay on water and its vital role in the health of a water 'starved' society.  He writes: "Since the 'water' we drink provides for cell function and its volume requirements, the decrease in our daily water intake affects the efficiency of cell activity........as a result chronic dehydration causes symptoms that equal disease..."

Increasingly scientists and health practitioners are confirming that if you maintain the acid alkaline balance of your body fluids at the correct level (slightly alkaline body) you will be able to overcome disease increase your energy levels and slow down the aging process.  We are alkaline by design but unfortunately modern diets, lifestyles, stress and environmental pollution lead to a build up of excess acidity in the body tissues often leading to serious health problems.  Whether you are suffering from degenerative health issues or are looking to maintain good health and slow down the aging process then good hydration and proper acid alkaline balance can make a huge difference.

Alkaline ionized water helps to hydrate the body better, it assists in reducing the excess acid load on the body and also helps to counteract harmful free radicals which are believed to be a major cause of degenerative disease.  Drinking alkaline water should be part of the daily dietary regime of everyone who is looking for high levels of wellness. It should also be drunk by everyone who is looking to reduce weight.
Dr Robert Young, leading microbiologist and author of the pH Miracle range of books says ‘If someone were to ask me what is the one thing they could do to enjoy better health- the answer would be simple – drink alkaline ionized water’

Amazing at it may seem but approximately 60-70% of our bodies are made up of water.  The muscles that move our bodies are 75% water; our blood that transports nutrients is 82% water; our lungs that provide our oxygen are 90% water; our brain that is the control centre of our body is 77-78% water and even our bones are 25% water.
It is the main ingredient of all body fluids, blood including lymph, digestive juices, urine, tears, sweat and the regulation of our metabolism.  Water is involved in almost every bodily function such as, circulation, digestion, absorption and of course the all important elimination of wastes.

The daily benefits of drinking water can help us improve many conditions such as headaches, exhaustion, toxins removal, circulation, angina, nutrient absorption, heartburn and hypertension.  Other benefits would include the efficient use of our kidneys where it filters out waste and toxins from the body.  Many noted authorities encourage the use of water in the prevention of diseases like colon, bladder and breast cancer and other types of ailments and disorders that affect the systems of our bodies.

Our health is truly dependent on the quality and quantity of the water we drink.  The amount you need varies from person to person depending on size, climate, diet and activity levels.

So how much water should you drink?

The experts all have a different opinion on this but you should consider the general rule of halving your current weight and using that number as a guideline for how many ounces of water you need per day.

For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, divide that by 2 to give you 75 so you should aim to consume 75 ounces of water a day.  To make this calculation more perceptible, take that number and divide it by 8 (because there are 8 ounces in a glass).  So 75 divided by 8 equals 9.5, so you should aim for drinking 9.5-10 glasses of water per day.  However, as an adult you should be aiming for 2 litres of water a day at least but you should build up to that over time.  If you start to drink 2 litres immediately, from not drinking any, it may make you feel sick and unwell as your body will go immediately into a detox and cleanse by releasing lots of toxins that will make you feel unwell.

Take small steps and build up to 2 litres gradually, that way the body will not become shocked by your new routine.

The above is just used as a guideline by many health activists as a rough guide of the recommended water intake per day.  Other factors should be kept in mind though including how hot or humid it is, what work you are doing, whether you are playing sport or working out in any way.

Water is absolutely vital for our good health.  Next to air, water is the most essential element to our survival.  Without it, humans would die in a few days.  If you are committed to a healthy lifestyle, make drinking enough natural water a habit in your life.  It won't take long for you to feel the benefit.

An excellent way to ensure you are drinking enough water during the day is carry an ECOtanka with you wherever you go.  Make a Difference.
